please help her BROKEN BEAK (update page 4)

I don't think it would be harmful to wait if you continue to hand feed and water her. It is something I would do immediately in the hope that she would eat and drink on her own. If you don't feel that it is something you could do then maybe you shouldn't do so. I do what I think is best for the...

please help her BROKEN BEAK (update page 4)

Just cut off the piece sticking straight up. Imagine you ripped your nail loose all the way back to the cuticle and it was stuck straight up, you would cut off the nail that was torn loose. Not the end of the finger just the nail stuck in the air. (not exactly the same but close enough)

    MOUSE!

If your chickens are interested let them eat them. There are many ways to kill the mice, often times the easiest way to kill a trapped animal is just drop the trap in water and wait ten minutes.

please help her BROKEN BEAK (update page 4)

It looks like it's just the sheath and the cuticle is intact. I wouldn't worry about it too much, just snip off the part sticking up. You may want to give her soft feed for a few days but she's a chicken and will probably hit it on things regardless. In two or three months it should be as good...

Will a 4' field fence keep my Bourbon Reds in?

Will a four feet fence keep them in? Maybe. Can they fly over it? Yes. All of the standard varieties of turkeys can fly well. Even though they can fly over the fence doesn't mean they will. Mine never show interest of getting to the other side of the fence. The hens roost about twenty feet...

    Turkey disease help please

It's pox. It is NOT blackhead. Don't go wasting your money on a treatment they don't need. It crops up from time to time and looks worse than it is.

How long to age young cockerel?

He is young so just wait until rigor passes, three or four days. I like to be able to move them before I cook them, so either fresh slaughter before rigor sets fully or after it breaks.

HELP!!! my chicken just ate my platinum nose ring...

Odds are it will remain in the gizzard. The longer it remains the more worn it will become.

Fluid filled mass on hen's chest. Infected/impacted crop?

Just check first thing in the morning. If her craw has gone down all is well. The craw just holds the food until it is fed into the gizzard; it should be empty or nearly so by morning, assuming she doesn't eat during the night. When the craw is full of feed and water and you turn a bird on its...

    Broody Turkey hen?

Well you said she was hissing and that tells me broody not sick. I still wouldn't worry about the food and water too much as long as she can get to some somewhere. She really doesn't have to get off the nest until she has to poop, I have yet to see a hen go in the nest. Even sitting on an empty...

    Broody Turkey hen?

Check to see if she has eggs, slide your hand under her and either lift her up a little to look or feel around for eggs. She will hiss, peck and probably draw a little blood. If there are eggs, do you have a tom so they are fertile? If yes then let her set if you want poults. If your other her...

Anyone else have bees in the chicken's feed?

It happens sometimes when there are no pollen sources. The bees can mistake the grain dust for pollen and collect it. The grain is so low in protein once you get any sort of flow going the bees should forget about the feed. The bees leave the chickens alone because they are away from their...

What are the best tools to process birds?

I use a Dexter Russell boning knife. They are fairly inexpensive and a decent quality. Get a good quality whetstone and learn how to use it. I have a few pieces of cord I use to hang them up to bleed out. Canning pot and thermometer to scald. Cutting board. Cooler with ice. Empty clean trash...

    Sick chicken w/ gape worm!

What you described sounds nothing like gape worm. Something got in your run and attacked your birds. It will probably be back tonight or one of the next few nights. Either kill the varmint or improve the pen so that it cannot get in. Blood loss and no immediate signs of injury make me think a...

    Green meat on the breast

Green Muscle Disease or Deep Pectoral Myopathy Increased incidence with heavier market weight. More likely in males. Pre-slaughter wing activity increases occurances. It is not uncommon. It can happen with turkeys also. Do a search; it should turn up some good information for you. I hope it...

    Sick Turkey

Personally I give my birds all the fruit and vegetable scraps I have, this includes raw potato. Most stuff they eat, some they pretty much leave it be, like the potatoes, alliums and citrus. Once they are done with their scraps they head out and graze. I figure the turkeys and chickens know what...

Fire ants nest in chicken cage..

I've never seen a colony that large except when I spread one out doing some landscaping, but they built a new centralized colony within a week. Is it possible the ants are foraging over the entire pen? When foraging they will sometimes excavate to some extent near a food source like spilled feed...
