I hatched out some blue cochin eggs. I ended up with 4 "blue", one black, one partridge. and one wacky one...he looks to be a partridge cochin mixed with something else...his legs are not fully feathered and his head is a little different than the others.

My real question is...what is the difference between Lemon Blue and Self Blue?? Any blue experts out their??

From what I understand...if you bred self blue to self blue, you'll always get blue. If it's "regular blue" then you'll end up with a mix of black, splash & blue chicks.

The lemon blues are a new color myself and some others are trying to perfect. You'll get a mix of colors used in making the lemon blue color if you breed two lemons together (like buff, blues, buff splashes, blue splashes, etc). So it does not breed true, either. In addition, it's not a recognized color for the cochins so they are not able to be shown, either.

A blue or self blue would look like this:

Splash, like this:

Black cochin:

Edited because I was confused!

Self blue is not a dominant gene, it's recessive. Also, blue and self blue are not the same. They are completely different genes.

Lemon blue is a brown red with a blue gene. Breeding lemon blue x lemon blue would result in brown red, lemon blue, and splash lemon blue.

Thanks! The above aren't mine, but they are from another breeder who is trying for the lemons, as well. I just bought eggs from her to add to my flock. It is very much trial & error at this point....at least with me. I've got buffs, blues and reds...my first eggs are still cookin', so we'll see. The lady with the above chickens said she just used buffs and blues to get the above, so we'll see with those, too! She said she's been getting a few lemon blues, some splashes & some washed out looking ones...
