drowning question

I got three new chicks today.... the marbles are in... wish me luck.

I put a waterer in the brooder with my last chicks that contains some big rocks. But I did it because they are bigger chicks (Blue Orps) and they kept spilling the water even when I filled it up.

I have had a chick or two drown, always silkies. Go Figure!

I guess they are so little that you have to make sure to use one of those lips or a small waterer.

I just got my chicks yesterday, researched drowning and adding rocks in the water and figured it'd probably be okay, but that I should get some clear rocks/marbles when I went to the shop today. I just woke up to find the loveliest of the chicks dead in the centimeter of water in our quart-sized chick waterer.

I'm annoyed that I didn't take drowning more seriously.

I've been doing it until they're past the "narcoleptic" stage, which is usually a couple days -- incidentally, also about as long as I can stand dealing with messing about with the rocks. Interestingly, though, my peeps never seemed to go through that stage this year, skipped straight to being wild and highly coordinated little monsters.
