    Sunny Woodlands Farm (NH, US)

We have a small homestead/farm in New Hampshire (US). We have 13 laying hens we got last year and a RIR rooster ("Sam") that sired 35 RIR and RIR/PBR chicks with them this year. Those incubator-born birds are about 3 months old now. We lost four of those early on, and about 7 of the 55 total...

Just Posting For Memories of My Chickies

I ordered 4 chicks from MyPetChicken.com and I loved the chicks I received. I bought four-1 day old chicks that I’ve wanted for awhile now: a SLWyandotte, BLRWyandotte, Speckled Sussex, and Barred Rock. Original plan was to sneak them under broody momma hen who’s chicks just hatched recently but...

Tsc speckled sussex "pullet"...I think not...😣

I got 4 speckled sussex "pullets" out of the bin at TDC. They are roughly 4 weeks old. Everybody looks great! Then I was gone for 3 days and this little fellow sprouted a comb!😂 Maybe, just maybe, an early developing pullet??? I'm not hopeful..

    5.5 Week Speckled Sussex, Roo?

The large full tail feathers say hen, but the comb is starting to get pink so that tells me roo. It is also top of the pecking order (actually, the only chick I've seen throw a peck at another). Any thoughts from folks? It was supposedly vent sexed as a hen when hatched.

New and need help identifying sexes and breeds

Hi all! I recently purchased seven chicks and its probably still a bit early to confirm sexes and breeds for sure but I'd appreciate any help you could provide on this! I know at least two chicks are not the breed we thought we bought, I now suspect they are Olive Eggers. The others I think...

success introducing bantams and surrogate hen!

Oh I’m so happy! It has been a LONG week! And I made some mistakes along the way but I feel like celebrating! my 4 year old Speckled Sussex went broody this year (she usually does), so I went and purchased 5 Bantam chicks at tractor supply for her. Out of the 5, only one passed away (he was...

    Speckled Sussex appearance differences

I'm not really worried about this, just thought it was interesting! I have two chicks which hatched from fertile Speckled Sussex eggs that I ordered via ebay and that came in the post (I'm in the UK). The two chicks look quite different- one has bold stripes while the other is more subtle and...

    McMurray Hatchery Initial Review

Hey friends, I just picked up a box of vibrant seemingly healthy chicks from the post office after an extra day of delay from the post office. McMurray packed them with a large heat pack plus six males for warmth. The only DOA chick was our free surprise chick which was some kind of blueish...

Four week old EE, Buff Orpington and Speckled Sussex gender?

I know it's early but was wondering if anyone had any inklings about my little mixed flock. The ones I'm a little dubious about are the White EE with those longer tail feathers and the buff orpington with the comb coming in. Thanks in advance! Our first Easter Egger, she's got some long tail...

    Speckled Sussex - roo?

Hello friends! I have two 6-week old SS and I know it’s early, but if anyone has a screaming answer for me I’m dying to know if my SS “Rosemary” is actually a “Roger.” Her comb is much bigger and more pink than her sister. However, I have read that this breed typically has large red combs in...

City dweller with free-range backyard micro flock

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I raised chickens in rural Connecticut in the late 1980s, but stopped when I moved back to Chicago. I restarted the chicken obsession in 2017 when one of my daughter's school friends had baby chicks but had no idea how to care for...
