Is it OK to breed a Speckled Sussex that has some siblings with possible eye problems?

We bought Speckled Sussex hatching eggs earlier this year. We got a good hatch rate and ended up with 4 roos and 3 hens. I noticed that 2 out of the 3 hens (not roos) might have eye site issues. But one looks perfectly fine and by my knowledge the roos as well. I can't know for sure if they were...

    12 Chickens: A Meaningful Number?

My partner and I recently moved to Missouri in 2020 and finally just started our chicken family this year in 2022. As of right now, we have our first 12 chickens: 2 cream legbars, 4 easter eggers, 3 speckled sussex, and 3 splash-laced red wyandottes. We turned (are still turning) an extra, old...

Has anyone on here crossed a Speckled Sussex with a blue egger to create a olive egger? Is it possible?

I read online that crossing a brown egger with blue egger with create a olive egger and Speckled Sussex lay light brown eggs so I was wondering if crossing them with a blue egger would create the expected outcome by what I've read. If anyone on here has done it pictures of the cross would be...

How Can I Show Judge My Chicken's Head the Non-Traditional Way (help plz)

I am in 4H and will be showing my speckled Sussex in a few days. She does wonderfully when I handle her, except for when I get around to showing her head. Usually, when I show a chicken's head, I bring the chicken around me so that they're just above my shoulder, that way I can efficiently show...

    Speckled Sussex, Welsummer, something else?

I bought these 3 chicks from a guy who hatched his own eggs and also buys eggs from hatchery and hatched them. They are all supposed to be speckled Sussex, and the guy spent a good 15 minutes staring into his brooder trying to figure out which chicks were speckled Sussex. He did have a list of...

    5-6 week update

Was pretty suspicious of this guy when he was only about 2 weeks of age. Posted here before when he was ~3-4 weeks. He’s now 5 1/2 weeks and I don’t think there’s any doubt left that he’s a cockerel! Still wanted to check in and have a few second opinions again now that he’s older (just in...

1 Year Old Speckled Sussex Not Laying

My speckled sussex is a little over a year old and I am almost positive she has never laid an egg. It wasn’t until 2 or 3 months ago that she started turning red but she is nowhere near as bright as my other hens. Recently when outside and I’m by the run she will come to a corner near me and...

Hen jumping on my back. Is this normal?

I have a Speckled Sussex hen that likes to jump onto (and sometimes sit on) my back. Is this normal and should I keep letter her do it? I think of it as a way to bond.. but sometimes she does it when I don't expect!
