I got an ancient Leahy Redwood from a fellow BYCer near Huntington, WV. 6 hour round trip to go get it right before Easter. It was a steal at $200!! I love it. Just have to work out the kinks. My aunt has a smaller cabinet she's swapping me for a couple bbw turkeys. Gonna see if she can bring it...
I had a total of 12 chicks hatch & survive between the 5th-7th. I had to cull 2 more that broke their yolks during hatch & had intestines protruding. 4 or 5 more pipped & drowned. I am no longer adding any water to my cabinet bator, even during hatch. I was told it was needed. Obviously it is...
Ok, no puffy cheeks or beards. The oddball baby definitely came from the bigger egg because it's twice the size of the other chicks. There are 3 little dark pullet eggs left & 1 big speckled egg, but way darker than the eggs oddball came from. No pips in those 4 yet, but they weren't even due...
Black could be lavender split as could the blue (I think). Gonna assume the racing stripes is that wheaten or brahma coming out, unless there was a welsumer in your pen.
@Auroradream26 4 of your babies are out & running around my brooder. 1 black, 2 blue, 1 brown & cream with racing stripes...all with feathered feet. I'll go back & look at shells, but I think they were all from the same pullet.
5 of my own have hatched successfully: 1 silkie mix, 2 ee, & 2 from...
X2...you won't see much movement until they pip internally.
And @Auroradream26, I have 1 of your babies from the tiny pullet eggs out & drying off in the bator. 2 more are pipped & zipping. I'll send pix of the group once everyone is out & dry. I also have 1 of my silkie crosses out & in the...
I put 8 in lockdown, but a couple looked iffy. There were a lot of clears or early quitters that looked like from the same bird. Suprisingly, a lot of the tiny pullet eggs made it to lockdown & look really good. There were a couple clears there too though. Overall, not bad out of 18 eggs with 2...
If you have a cabinet, just turn your fan off while the door is open & get them moved to the hatching tray. Humidity & temps recover within minutes of closing the door & turning the fan back on. I wouldn't leave them in the turner racks. Too easy to get stuck in the rack or fall out of the tray.
Didn't count eggs going into lockdown last night, but I tossed a bunch of clears & quitters since I finally found an actual flashlight that worked. They are due the 6th but look to be running a little behind. My bator keeps getting unplugged by forgetful & clumsy kids.
So far, my hatch sux. 16 chicks in the brooder, several with partially open navels, and lots that are pipping & quitting. Looks like a couple broke their yolks, others look like they drowned. I'm guessing my humidity has been too high. It's a new-to-me old Leahy Redwood that didn't come with...
9 hatched so far. 3 from brown eggs, 6 from blue & green eggs. 3 of the blue/green egg babies have lightly feathered feet & are definitely not silkie crosses. This means my blue copper marans is the daddy & these babies should be olive eggers. I love when tracing the daddy is made easy...lol
Chicks started hatching last night. Temps dropped to 70 yesterday because my bator got unplugged for about 10 hours while I was gone. NOT good for active hatching. Had a couple hatch with yolk sacs not completely absorbed & a couple quit after pipping. Hopefully the rest will get back in gear &...
I just put 101 out of 111 eggs from my layer pen in lockdown along with 2 turkey eggs & 6 mixed goose eggs. I should have overflowing brooders by Monday. Anyone need chicks? I can ship!!!
I almost always have something in lockdown or hatching. I put 24 mixed goose eggs in my bator on Easter that we picked up on the way home. They were all pulled from different nests. The first started hatching a couple days ago. I have just been candling every couple days & putting anything that...
