How long are brittle eggs “normal” for new layers?

**Update** The food dye didn’t work, other than giving us multicolored poo. Lol. Not sure if it was too cold to work right or what. I’m going to have to come up with another way to figure it out. Thanks for the help everyone!

Same here. Ours usually just do the basic bacteria and metal testing, which we use for maintenance. But it’s definitely worth checking!

    Ohio train wreck

We are near the IN border, and we’re upstream on the Miami River, so we probably won’t get ours tested. But If you’re downstream I’d definitely get it tested.

    Ohio train wreck

When we moved into our home here in OH we used this product to test our well. I liked it because it had pre- and post- water filter testing. https://mytapscore.com/products/simple-water-home-test Their advanced well water testing kit lists vinyl chloride and benzene as being tested. I’ll...

    Ohio train wreck

Hi! Just my two cents as a chemist—I would still get your well independently tested. There are mail order kits that are great. The VOCs like vinyl chloride and the other compounds that spilled take a while to leech into the ground water table, but once they’re there it’s almost impossible to...

How long are brittle eggs “normal” for new layers?

Yeah, they are paper thin with very little calcium on the outside. I will try to figure out which one it is. She lays before 6am so I usually find the egg asap so they don’t try to eat it.

How long are brittle eggs “normal” for new layers?

Hi all, My girls are 22 wks old and just starting to lay eggs. Most of the eggs are normal, with hard shells and the occasional double yolk. At least one of my girls (maybe two) are laying brittle eggs. How long is this considered normal for new layers and is there anything to do besides offer...

    %Fat in layer feed?

Here are the two I was looking at, particularly the whole grain option. They also make a corn/soy free option at 4.5% fat that I can post if you want.

    %Fat in layer feed?

Hi all, First time chicken owner here. My gals are 22 wks old and starting to lay. I have been feeding them the Henhouse Reserve from Kalmbach. I found a local feed mill that has way better prices on similar layer feed, but when I looked at the nutrient breakdown their %fat is at 8%! That...
