We have the same issues with our single little black bantam in a flock with seven Chanteclers (the Alberta variety). Between the other hens and the roosters she could never catch a break. Lost so many feathers, stopped laying, and wouldn’t come out of her (smaller) nesting box unless I picked...
Not sure if covered above (too little time) but I picked up some very cheap Trex deck board remnants. Indestructible and cut, drill screws like wood...
up here in Canada we use Kijiji instead of Craigs list.
Our chickens help themselves to the clean sorghum seed-based cat litter in the barn cats’ litter box. Only after I’ve scooped the litter box.
Even so today a young rooster found a morsel of cat poop, and ate it (yuck).

Elsewhere on this forum I described a pre-fab coop we bought for our acreage. We planned to get chicks next spring. Finishing the coop got put on hold with an early winter freeze.
Meanwhile friends with too many chickens “gifted“ us with a hen, a rooster, and six chicks only 14 days...
Update. We built our coop today. A work colleague offered us a hen, some chicks, and a rooster. Despite tons of other things going on in our lives eg Covid as health care workers, we finally got going on this.

As a teenaged camp counsellor we explored a nearby barn one night. One of the guys peed on the electric fence, and yes, was zapped. He was only about a foot away (all stream and no spray at that distance) and standing in tall wet grass...
