We’ve got a hen just over a year old who has developed red blotches on her underside and chest. Pics attached. Out of 17 she’s the only one we have noticed this on. What is it? What should we do? It’s been really hot here for a few days last week. They have a dust box, a coop inside the big barn and a big run. Any advice is so helpful. Thank you all.

Is she pulling out her own feathers, or is another chicken picking her? Does she roost at night, or sleep on the ground? It seems inflamed where her feathers are missing. I would look her over for any tiny bugs, lice or mites, and make sure that she is not sleeping on damp bedding. She has some green bruising on her leg, so she may be getting pecked or bullied, or she might be doing it herself. You will need to observe her and the others to see what is going on.

Thank you sooo much for your reply!! She was the top hen, I don’t see her getting picked on but will continue to watch closely. The flock roosts on a high multilevel 2x4 staggered roost, no damp bedding. But she is often snuggled down in damp dirt under a low pallet shade area when it’s hot. They do have a shaded run too that is always available to them. I haven’t noticed her pecking her own feathers but I will watch more closely. Where do you see bruising, I didn’t even notice that thank you for spotting it!! Where do you see it? As for mites etc I didn’t see any during our photo shoot…she is the only one with the skin condition…if there were mites would the other birds be showing these symptoms too?? Thank you a million times for your reply and help!!

The bruising appears on her right leg with the green dots. I would try to encourage her to snuggle down in some dry bedding such as pine shavings. You can see brown specks of mite droppings on skin, or tiny moving lice or mites on skin if they are present.

Thank you so much for your reply. We just went out to the roost and looked again for mites, no signs of mites. She does have a lot of dry bedding to be in so I will try to encourage her to be in it. Should I apply any type of soothing salve? Do you know of any that you would recommend? Will Hen Healer burn the already inflamed skin? Thank you again!!!
