In the Brooder
I just gave my hens grit for the first time today. They just got moved into the coop a couple of days ago. They're six and seven weeks old. I had a small pile of left over pit run gravel and used that for my grit. I spread some gravel out on a plastic lid and let the sun dry it out for a few hours. Then I took a feed trough I had from the brooder and a piece of metal screen that was left over from building the coop and simply used my hands to wash handfuls of gravel through the screen into the trough. That left some good mixed grit. I'd guess the screen size lets pebbles through up to about 4 or 6mm. Now they can enjoy some veggie treats once in a while. Happy Hens.
