They are beautiful. How old are they? My avatar shows my golden Phoenix. His tail is still growing and is longer now than when the avatar picture was taken. He's 8 months old and has lost his tail once already in a fight. I am wondering how long it takes for the tails to reach full length. I'm, obviously, new to long tails.

For growing the tail a 28% protein game bird feed for your rooster but that isn't good for hens. That is what has been told to me. I'm still new to the long tailed breeds but have a great teacher.

Beautiful! If possible please post another picture of your golden Phoenix. My avatar is my golden when he was a bit younger. His grandfather was a white crested black Polish paired to a Phoenix hen. Father was 1/2 golden paired to a Phoenix hen. Now, he's with a Phoenix hen, and a Yokohama hen and there's 23 chicks running around after their moms.

I'll take a new picture and post it of Avatar. His tail is considerably longer and still growing.

So glad to have found this thread. My fiancé is Japanese & wants to raise Onagadori chickens. He has a special affinity for birds & it means a lot to him to try to keep the breed alive. We are hoping to be able to get some in there next 1-2 years, but will see how things go. In the meantime I’m researching & trying to learn all I can. Where did you get your birds & what special care or concerns have you had with them?
