Hi Everyone,
I posted 2 months ago, here about my plan to convert my storage shed into a coop and build a run.
It's done!
The shed is 8x12 and the run surrounds it on two sides. I put in two windows, a solar-powered chicken door, and extra vent holes in the front. The wire fencing was all free from my brother-in-law's old farm stash. I spent about $250 on lumber, and my son helped me with the fence. I installed no-dig spikes around the perimeter. The run is covered with bird netting. I live in town so there are not a whole lot of ground predators, but we do have hawks.
The white desk inside the coop was a freebie found alongside the road, and the waterer and food tray were also free. The crates will be nesting boxes in a few months.
I now have 8 chickens! I have 2 Lavender Orpingtons, 2 Olive Eggers, 2 Cinnamon Queens, and 2 Americanas. The orps and the OEs were born in March, and the other four were a dollar each at Rural King last week (they're around a month old). They are all doing GREAT! I can't believe how fast they grow.
I go out and sit with them throughout the day and every night, but they still won't let me hold them. We're getting there, though! Today is the first time they've ventured outside of the coop and they've been in there for a week, lol. Now I know why scared people are called "chicken".
They are so fun to watch, and I am loving every minute of it.
