My "extra" Bresse rooster is the king of the main flock so I hatched out some of the brown eggs- the only brown egg layers I have are a heavy-bodied strain of Rhode Island Reds. The first batch of 18 chicks turned out to be 9 pullets and 9 cockerels. The cockerels got culled last weekend at 18 weeks and all ended up on the scale right around 3 lbs, +/- 2 oz.
This is the first one in the crockpot and it's absolutely the best tasting chicken I've ever had. The three of us left nothing but bones. I even poured the crockpot juice through a screen and drank it like a tasty beverage.
We luckily have ten more cockerels that we hatched a month after the original batch, so they'll be ready for Camp Frigidaire in a few more weeks.
