As best as I can tell, you can have up to 24 birds on greater than 20K sq ft property, but for smaller lots all poultry is prohibited.

Those are just the Zoning Codes for two of the five total Single-Family lot sizes. Here is the total break down

Chapter 17.12 RESIDENTIAL ESTATES 40,000 SQ. FT. ZONE (R-E-40) = maximum of 24 chickens
Chapter 17.14 RESIDENTIAL ESTATES 20,000 SQ. FT. ZONE (R-E-20) = maximum of 24 chickens
Chapter 17.16 RESIDENTIAL SUBURBAN 14,000 SQ. FT. ZONE (R-S-14) = Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for domesticated animals (includes chickens) if the lot is larger than 20,000 sqft. Limits (1) animal under 125 lbs., the required staff report to the Planning Comission could recommend more chickens based upon the extreme weight/size difference.
Chapter 17.18 RESIDENTIAL SUBURBAN 9,000 SQ. FT. ZONE (R-S-9) = Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for domesticated animals (includes chickens) if the lot is larger than 20,000 sqft. Limits (1) animal under 125 lbs., the required staff report to the Planning Comission could recommend more chickens based upon the extreme weight/size difference.
Chapter 17.20 RESIDENTIAL ONE-FAMILY 6,000 SQ. FT. ZONE (R-1-6) = Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for domesticated animals (includes chickens) if the lot is larger than 20,000 sqft. Limits (1) animal under 125 lbs., the required staff report to the Planning Comission could recommend more chickens based upon the extreme weight/size difference.

Looks like you would submit for a Conditional Permit (Minor) regarding use item 7. Note: you technically would need on to have more than two adult cats or dogs under item 8.

Total Fees of $1,300 and about six weeks from submittal for processing and getting to a date on the Planning Commision agenda. This form appears to be pretty typical of what the cities and counties around Fresno in the central valley area of California require.

Good luck!

Thanks! It still seems that 20,000 sq ft is the minimum area.

I just found out that El Cajon city council is already in the process of considering revisions to the municipal code, so this is the perfect time to ask them to include backyard chickens as one of the revisions.

The next city council meeting will be this coming Tuesday (June 8, 2010) at 7 pm, and the general code revisions are already on the agenda. I am planning to go and fill out a speaker slip so that I can request the change. Hopefully some other like-minded people will show up!

If you are planning to come, please send me an email!

Folks,

I have three hens raised from chicks that are approaching one year old. We live in Fletcher Hills and these hens have turned into my children's house chickens. They are very much loved.

Our HOA has given us no end of grief despite the unversal approval of our immediate neighbors of the chickens. Indeed, they have brought together neighbors who hadn't previously know each other who come to our yard to feed and gawk at the girls.

The HOA took what I think has to be the most mean spirited tack today. They called animal control. The officer showed up and we have ten days to eliminate the girls.

While I will deal with the HOA and its issues, I have decided to move forward with a change to the zoning laws in El Cajon to permit the raising of no more than four hens for family use on lots of at least 20,000 square feet in certain residential zones so long as the hens are not permitted to escape from the lot where they are kept. I need support as the filing fee is $1800 and this will be a fight.

Is there anyone out there who is with me on this?????

Best,
Matt

The zoning laws in El Cajon have been updated, and all single family residential zones now allow pet poultry. As of the time of this post, the rules are 10 square feet of fully enclosed run per bird in unpaved backyeard space, 4 square feet of covered and enclosed coop per bird, one next per bird (dumb but ok), and 1 bird per 100 square feet of unpaved back yard up to a limit of 10.

Here's the link and the code sections to look this up (as of today anyway).
