can children touch chicks/chickens

Harrison (5) plays with our girls all the time. "Queenie" (Dad is an Englishman) is his favorite. She is a Barred Rock, and is our best "lap chicken". He carries her around the yard, hunts for bugs under rocks and then proudly presents them to her for snacking.

Oh gosh, to not let my kids touch the chicks at least twice each day, the kids would surely revolt! The rule is to wash hands after. My daughter has a strange habit of running her hands through the bedding. Eww! We tell her not to, but when your little hands are following around a chick, it's kind of hard to avoid. So, the rule is to just wash hands well after.

I agree with the comment about teaching them to be gentle, and always making sure they are supervised.
