I picked up a few Barred Rocks from MyPetChicken.com a while back and one of them has a rose comb. Is this not a Barred Rock? Is there some Dominique or something in there? What are your thoughts?

Probably a Dominique. When people at the hatchery take a quick look without focusing on the combs or defining characteristics, there are bound to be mistakes.

Barred Rocks lay better.

The black and white barring on barred rocks are the same width. the barring on Dominique feathers is very different. The light bars are a silvery white and the dark bars are not quite black, this author preferring a dove gray. The light bars are to be almost twice as wide as the dark bars; this combined with bar shape gives the Dominique its mottled appearance.

check out the comparison in the "American Dominique " book

In hatchery birds, the only difference between the two breeds is the comb really. They have both been crossed back and forth and are for the most part the same size and color, just have different combs. So if you got it from a hatchery and it has a rose comb it would easily qualify as a Dominique.

But the Heritage/Exhibition strains of the breeds have quite a bit of contrast as the Dominiues are supposed to be a bit slimmer than the barred rocks and the color and stance seems to be a little different but I dont remember what the tail angles and such are supposed to be for the two. But there is considerable difference in the REAL examples of these breeds.

So very true.

Hatcheries have been crossing the faster feathering Dominique with the slower feathering Barred Rock to create a sex-link for some time.
