Review by 'dawntreader' in article 'Reasons for Tossing Out Your Indoor Brooder and Start Raising Your Chicks Outdoors'

Excellent article, and very timely for us! As I understand the article, a heating element was still used in the run while the chicks were young. The term was a "heating pad cave". What exactly was that? Is it the blue and white thing in the picture? If so, was that an actual heating pad used...

Review by 'dawntreader' in article 'How to Handle the Ageing Process of Chickens'

Great article! Thanks for providing a suggestion for what to do with a hen after she dies. We had to do this with one of ours that nibbled on potato vines the day before (which are toxic for chickens). Active and healthy one day, dead in the coop the next with no other signs of harm, egg-bound...

Comment by 'dawntreader' in article 'Clamser Coop started on 05/02/2014'

Very nice aesthetic and functional coop! Wondering about the light fixture in the coop - is that for heat during the winter, or for increased egg production, or ....?

2024 BYC Calendars are HERE - Free Shipping to US Addresses!!!

Do I need to have a separate login for purchasing the Calendar with the checkout software? The login for the checkout did not accept my email and password that I currently use for accessing the backyardchickens.com website. That seemed a little strange, however, since I login to...

Review by 'dawntreader' in article 'How Much Room Do Chickens Need?'

Well written article! The inclusion of the many factors that contribute to the health of our chickens reveals the tradeoffs that must be made in a given situation. We live in a suburban environment, and have built a run and a coop, but recognized early on that they are more content (and quiet!)...

Laid one egg and then stopped😓

We have six chickens, live in Texas where it is now hot. We've had them since chicks going on a year ago now. A couple of them did not lay eggs for several weeks when they got broody and wanted to sit on the other's eggs. After awhile they resumed egg laying as before. A tip regarding shavings...

Who has raised Buff orpingtons before?

Our first venture into backyard chickens for eggs is with 2 yellow Buff Orpingtons and 2 Barred Rocks week old chicks. A month later we supplemented with 2 Blue Australorps and an Easter Egger week old chicks. We spent time handling them when they were chicks and getting them use to our dogs...

Need advice for getting/building a coop and run

Think carefully about the number of nesting boxes. We have 7 hens, and 3 nesting boxes. The nesting boxes all get used every day, and reduce the amount of squabbling that can occur when multiple hens want (need) to lay.

Comment by 'dawntreader' in article 'Frostbite: What to Know About Injury, Care and Recovery'

Amazing how the healing process works in a chicken. Thanks for the information which is a strong encouragement to not have a chicken get into this predicament in the first place, but if it ever does happen, your explanations will be very helpful to nurse one back to health. Great information...

    Our chicken coop/run construction progress

Great suggestions sniper338 - thanks for the ideas! Will have time this coming week to do both of those. My wife wants to build another roost outside of the coop also somewhere. When it is raining (in the forecast this coming weekend) the roost in the run as you suggested would be a good idea...

I live in the country. Yesterday my son drove up from the Nashville area and delivered my Christmas present. A 4x6 chicken coop!

Our chicken coop is a 4x6 coop. You can see it at https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/our-chicken-coop-run-construction-progress.1541236/page-4#post-26355611 We figured that 7 chickens was about right for that size. We live in N. Texas and have a couple Barred Rock chickens, a couple Buff...

    Our chicken coop/run construction progress

With the cold weather, we attached some 3 mil plastic in the run area below the coop. Even though it is in the low 20's this afternoon (right now), they are all very active! We let them free range outside the run today. They normally come back in when we call and shake some corn in a bucket, but...

    How cold is too cold?

This is our first winter with chickens, they were chicks we purchased at the feed store this past July and August. 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rock, 2 Blue Australorp and an Easter Egger. We have a non insulated coop (see my Coop Story here on backyardchickens.com) which has a well ventilated...

What do I need to do to keep them warm?

Nice work - and that arrangement should help you visually tell the pecking order they have established among themselves at any given time.

    Our chicken coop/run construction progress

Update on how the coop and run are working. We have 7 chickens now that are between 4-5 months old now. They weathered the heat here in N. Texas well! The coop windows stayed open during the summer, with a tarp on the west side to block the harsh sun in the evening. That worked great, keeping...
