Comment by 'KRS57' in media 'Sorry for the awful picture. I put vinyl netting on the rafters to keep the girls from roosting up there, they were getting poop everywhere. I'm trying to contain the majority of the mess under the roosting bars for cleaning purposes.'

How did things go with putting mesh on the rafters? I am worried my chickens will not see the mesh/chicken wire and still try to get up in the rafters and hurt themselves.

Will it be ok to block the rafters off in my coop with chicken wire?

Inside my coop the rafters are accessible to my chickens and they will roost up there over night; see Picture of Coop. I got my chickens about two years ago and they have been doing this ever since then. It is difficult for the chickens to get down for the rafters in the morning. It is even...

What is happening to my chicken's feathers?

I think the issue started right before I introduced the new chicks and the issue became very noticeable and got worst after the new chicks were added. We were overcrowded when the chicks got bigger. We had 16 chickens. Added 8 chicks. We gave 4 chicks and 4 hens away. They were probably...

What is happening to my chicken's feathers?

Thank you! For the Permethrin dust. It only contains 0.25% of Permethrin from what I see online. Does that sound right? Do you just spray or apply the dust to each chicken?

What is happening to my chicken's feathers?

No because I did not think it was mites. What do you recommend for treatment and how? Their diet is Scratch and Peck Feeds and Dumor Chick Starter/Grower. Before the Dumor Chick Starter/Grower they were getting Country Life Organic Poultry Feed in addition to the Scratch and Peck Feeds.

What is happening to my chicken's feathers?

I do not think this is molting. Molting may start as early as August or as late as November. This has been going on since April. My chickens are 1.5 years old.

What is happening to my chicken's feathers?

My chickens pictured are about 1.5 years old. They have been having feather issues for about 4 months. The Rhode Island Red has it the worst. It looks like her feathers have been pulled out. I had two roosters which I removed because I though that could be this issue. The roosters have been gone...

Smelly run after rain near feeders

Hi, Just one section of my chicken run smells really bad. I do not know what ammonia smells like, but I don't think it is that? The smell is limited to one area where we have feeders for the chickens. It rained most of January here in central California and that area was extremely muddy. The...

    Best Ground for UncoveredRun?

Thank you for the quick reply! It rains where I live and my run is completely open. Will the pine shavings be okay when it rains? Also, should I turn the chips every couple weeks like I would for a deep liter coop?

    Bedding for open chicken run

Hi, I see that people use pine shavings for their chicken runs and I want to do this too to help with smell, but my chicken run is completely open and I live in an area where it rains during the fall, winter, and spring. What do I do with the chips for rain? Also, do I need to wrack and turn...

    Help remodeling an existing coop!

Thank you! I checked out the thread and got some good ideas! We have two non-producing plum trees and a few large bushes in the run so it gets a good amount of shade!

    Help remodeling an existing coop!

Thank you so much for the response! I am located in Sacramento, CA and will work on updating my profile! In the winter our low can get down to 39 degrees on average and we have pretty hot summers with over 100 degree heat. It is great to hear that my ventilation is good! I was wondering about...

    Help remodeling an existing coop!

Hi, I bought a property with a chicken coop on it. It is 89 inches by 89 inches (56 square feet), but it is divided in two sections of 44 inches x 89 inches (27 square feet). One section has roosting bars and the other had two nesting box. I removed the prior nesting boxes because I eventually...
