    Solar Fan

I am looking for suggestions from anyone who uses a solar fan in their coop. I live in Upstate South Carolina and we are in the middle of a very hot summer. My coop has side vents as well as ventilation across the entire top of the coop (the roof is raised off of the walls) but my hens are...

    Bumblefoot?

I did do surgery on my one bird that had a swollen foot but when I cut out the scab there was very little behind it. I bought Tricide-Neo and soaked one of my other girls feet today. She is my test case to see if that will work.

    Bumblefoot?

I have a chicken that most definitely has bumblefoot (swollen foot with a black scab and puss coming out after soaked). After discovering this I went and checked my other chickens and there are a few others who also have black scabs on the bottom of their feet but there is zero swelling and...

Thanks!!!! I am trying adding a Tums to their water and will see how that goes! Today we found an egg on the coop floor when we let the chickens out but it was intact!

    Very Soft Egg Shells

I have a chicken (I'm assuming it is the same chicken) laying eggs with very, very soft shells. I have actually been finding these eggs in the coop under the roost and I'm guessing she is laying them sometime during the night. I was getting these eggs on occasion but yesterday I found a...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

7 eggs out of 6 chickens. Today was the second time I found an egg on the coop floor. I swear I didn't see it there first thing this morning when I let the girls out but it was there this afternoon when I got home from work. Any ideas what is going on? I can't imagine she is laying in her sleep...

Pics of your most colorful eggs!!

I am not 100% sure which chicken is laying which egg, but based on my best guess the order starting with the round egg and going clockwise is production red, Australorp, Australorp, Easter Egger, Production Red.

    Laying Doubles

She is a red-sex linked and I just transitioned them to an organic layer feed since all my hens are now laying. She has been doing this since she started laying when they were still just on a grower feed and I had oyster shell/ground egg shells as a calcium supplement.

    Laying Doubles

I have one chicken who started laying on Christmas who consistently lays double yolk eggs. She will lay a double at least once a week and this week I have gotten two doubles since Friday. Is there something that I can/should do to help this from happening because I cannot imagine that it is...

Keeping Water Thawed with No Electricity

I live in northern SC and there are days/nights where my water has been frozen (I am more concerned about the days since I work full time and cannot check the water every few hours). I do not have electricity in my coop so I was wondering if anyone had tricks to keep water thawed on those rare...

    Chicken's Won't Eat Oyster Shell

My first one started laying on Christmas Day and two others followed about a week later.

    Chicken's Won't Eat Oyster Shell

The eggs that I am getting have decent shell hardness so I know they are getting enough calcium from somewhere. I added egg shells to the oyster shells (I have it in a separate container so they can eat it at will) and the chickens ate the egg shells all up. I guess I have picky eaters.

    Chicken's Won't Eat Oyster Shell

I currently have 6 pulleys, three of which are laying. I am still feeding grower feed and supplementing with egg shells and oyster shell since not all of my girls are laying yet. I started offering egg shells as a calcium source and my girls ate it up. I ran out one weekend and didn't have any...

Merry Eggsmas! First Egg on Christmas Morning

Merry Christmas! Not only did one of my chickens wait until Christmas morning to lay her fist egg, but she also decided it would be appropriate to wait until I was out of town . Oh well at least the person taking care of my chickens saved the egg for me!

adding one new pullet to existing flock? how long does it take?

I tried introducing a new hen at night while the others were roosting. In a perfect world I would not have done that and would have had her in a separate area for awhile but for my small flock of six in a backyard I did not have the luxury of that. I did leave the coop door open for the first...

    Garlic for chickens?

Thank you that definitely helps! I think I am going to give them some garlic this week since we are just starting to get into cooler weather here in South Carolina but I think come Spring/Summer I am definitely going to give it to them at least once a month.

How to Introduce a New Hen

I never thought about keeping the coop open at night during the warmer months, is that something to consider? Right now we are in the middle of a nice cold rain so I will be keeping it closed probably through the winter.
