Magpie

Pros: very friendly
i have had only 1 magpie and i got him when he was a duckling from out local feed store along with 3 other ducklings, he grew up really fast, he LOVED bananas. i named him furby. he did not have perfect coloring but he still got a blue ribbon at the fair. later that year i sold them because at that time i did not have a place for them over the winter. i wish i would have kept him he would run up to me and jump in my lap when i sat down on the grass.

Wyandotte

Updated
Pros: wonderful layers, docile
Cons: aggresive to other chickens, moody
i have 2 wyandottes, a silver and a golden laced, they are both hens, i named them fili and kili. i got them as chicks from murray mcmurray hatchery on 2-7-2015. my golden laced took longer to grow then my silver laced, but around 2 months she had almost all of her feathers in, my silver laced (kili) lays me a tan egg every day and they are a nice size egg, her comb is not a good comb for a show chicken but she is very sweet, my golden (fili) on the other hand is VERY aggresive and mean to my other chickens, she is more plump, too. when i lay scratch grain on the floor for them as their morning treat, she attacks everybody and chases them off till she eats all she wants, she runs up to my faverolles and for no reason pulls feathers from the back of her neck, she is nice to me, and she lets me pick her up, but ot my other chickens, she is MEAN! she gave me a brown egg every day till now because she is going broody.
Pros: rare a beautiful
The Swedish Black Hen, or Svart Höna, has the same fibromelanistic trait as that most coveted chicken breed from Indonesia, the Ayam Cemani. That is, virtually every physical feature outside and inside the Swedish Black Hen is the deepest black color. Some claim to see differences between the Ayam Cemani and the Swedish Black Hens –for example, the Ayam Cemani have been said to be more like gamefowl in body type– but the external differences are subtle and if they exist at all can only be discerned by a highly trained eye. Despite these physical commonalities the Swedish Black Hen has a vastly different history and has over the centuries adapted to a much colder climate than the Ayam Cemani. Also, Swedish Black Hens are even rarer than Ayam Cemani. A national poultry census in Sweden verified the existence of fewer than 500 Swedish Black Hens.
The gene that causes fibromelanosis is a mutation that existed in Asia more than 800 years ago. The gene promotes the proliferation of black pigment cells. This same mutation may have made its way in chickens transported to Norway as many as 400 years ago. (Norway and neighboring Sweden have a complex and often bloody history, but suffice to say that for a period of time Norway was a state within Sweden until Norway won independence in 1905.) A landrace of exotic black birds flourished on what is now the Sweden-Norway border, and what had probably begun as a tropical transplant to this frigid region eventually adapted to the colder climate. Some sources suggest that Swedish Black Hens made their way to the Nordic countries from seamen who traveled from Mozambique in the 1800s, although explanations vary and are often vague.
What is certain is that Swedish Black Hens are relatively small and sleek –the roosters weigh about 4 lbs.—and have a friendly, relaxed temperament. The hens lay white or cream-colored eggs. Usually the birds are almost completely black although some have deep mulberry red facial skin. Feathers can shimmer with iridescent greens and purples. These birds are capable foragers and reflect the mastery that comes from the hundreds of years of free-range living enjoyed by their ancestors. A Swedish poultry keeper told us that Black Hens are known for not suffering from frostbite on their combs. Our Swedish Black Hens have roosted in the open on windy nights as cold as 20°F without any ill effects. We have found this landrace to be hardy and easy to raise despite its rarity.

I just hatched three Svart Honas. Two of the chicks are totally crazy. They run around with so much energy they bash into things. The third one seems developmentally disabled. Very slow and gets knocked over all the time. Is this normal? My only experience with chicks is with silkies and they were so civilized compared to these birds.

Hamburg

Pros: beautiful, docile
Cons: can be flighty at times
i got my silver spangled hamburg from murray mcmurray hatchery on 2-7-2015 as a chick, now she is 6 months old as she is so pretty! she lays a small white egg every day and she Loves to dust bathe. i read that this breed is known to fly up in trees but she has not been in a tree the highest she has even been was in her roosting bar at night.. i named my hen dotty.

this is a picture of her when she was a few days old.

she is on the right

this is a picture a her i took a few days ago

Pros: very tame, lay big eggs.
Cons: that are a little agresive to other timid birds
i had 1 new hampshire red hen, i purchased as a chick from murray mcmurray hatchery, i let my father name her when she was a chick, and he named her sunshine! she was very sweet. and she was very pretty, too! i picked her out because i wanted to get a red-ish chicken, but i didnt want a rhode island red. she started to lay when she was 5 1/2 months old, and her 1st egg was BIG!!! unfortunately i sold her the day she laid her 1st egg, she was a little mean to my timid chickens and she would peck them when she were eating or drinking while she was eating or drinking. but she was always nice to me, she would fallow me around the yard waiting to give her a snack.

here she is as a chick (she is on the left)

and here is a pic of her when she was 5 months
Pros: is cheap, hangs good,
Cons: it leaks when you flip it over to put it down
i bought one this year, and it was really cheap, less then $10.00. it works really good, too. i had to hang it because my birds would knock it over. and it leaks when you flip it over to put it down, but once it is down it stops leaking. it is very good!
Pros: very sweet, calm, and love attention!
Cons: can be scared easy
i have 2 white crested, a drake and a hen, they are very sweet and calm, they don't have a HUGE crest in their heads but they have medium sized ones, they love to swim and they are not as messy as other ducks with water. they are one the most docile birds i have.

Pros: pretty, friendly, and sweet
Cons: loud
i had 2 black Swedish ducks last year, their names were Lydia and Skipper, i raised them with 2 other ducks and they all got along with each other just fine, my Swedish were both females and the only time they were really loud was when i would walk outside and i would say "good morning!" then they would start taking really loud for me to let them out side their coop, i lived in town and they free ranged, they never left our property, i think this breed is very nice.

Marans

Pros: very sweet, calm, and are great roosters!
Cons: mine started to crow at 3 months of age, other then that , i cant think of any.
i have a dark cuckoo maran rooster, he is almost 4 months old, at 3 months he started to crow which is not that bad but i live in town so if we get a complaint, he is out of here, he is so sweet and tame, he is so gentle and friendly to my hens, and very protective (but not mean protective, he does not attack people) and he is always on the look out for predators, my rooster's name is Thorin of of the Hobbit, and he was my free chick from murray mcmurray, at 1st i thought he was a barred rock, but comparing him from my other barred rock he looks different, I almost wish i had a female for their dark eggs.

Cochin

Super Admin
Updated
Pros: nice, sweet to people, hardy, docile.
Cons: can be mean to other chickens if not raised with them, very fast and dont like to be held for very long.
i have 2 Cochins, a black bantam hen (Lucy) and a white standard Cochin hen ( Snowy) they are very nice but when i put my new birds with the flock Lucy was very mean to them and its been about 2 1/2 months and she is still mean to them not as much as before but she wont let them eat when she eats or perch by her at night, if one does dare to, she attacks them and pushes them of the perch. put Lucy is very nice to people, she will walk up to you and want to be held but only for a short time, and snowy is VERY fast, she will keep running and running, it take me 10 min. to catch her!! but when you pick her up she is sweet. lucy is 1 year and 4 months, snowy is 2 months 11 days.

hi! update: i sold my white cochin last fall and i am sad to say my sweet little lucy has died.... i have no idea how, she was not being her spunky self and about 3 days later she passed away.
