Yes, the old male to female ratio

Hi all. I know this topic has been bled to death, like a female kept with 5 males. I have kept quails in the past at 1:3 as suggested by quail literature. I now understand this is not a good system and 1:5 - 1:8 is much better. I am living in a tiny townhouse so am trying to keep a low profile. It is important that noise be kept to an absolute minimum. I understand if i keep a colony, the males will crow often. I've been told that keeping 1 male with 8 females or even 10 will reduce crowing to a minimum and still ensure good fertility. If i keep this ratio, what is the expected fertility? Also, if i keep 2 cages side by side with 1:8, would the males try compete in a crow-off with each other? The issue i have is that i wish to keep as many quails as possible but with as little noise yet with maximum fertility. Thanks in advance for your input and comments!

I keep 1 to 8 ratio in a couple pens. 1 to 6 in others.

Crowing seems to be the most early morning. But it is mainly from my juvenile males. My older males that have hens to their self hardly ever crow. Then it is sporadically.

The largest majority of my eggs are fertile. I have a young male that I don't think. A dozen hens would be enough for he. Breeds constantly.

But their are females that a male favors over the others but they eventually hit them all.

Between my breeder and grow out pens I have 10. With a little over 200 quail between them all.

I'm glad this got asked. I'm about to harvest my extras and would like very much to go with 1:7 or 8, but I'm worried about fertility because I intend to breed around 40-50 every 8 weeks, and I don't want a ton of dud eggs because my ratio is no good.

Thanks for post, can you tell me which breed or environment suitable for laying eggs then hatched herself

Malik, you should post a picture of your birds. Maybe if we see them, we can identify the problem.

A happy male hardly ever crows and it tends to be one or twice at dawn and dusk to announce "this is my territory". If males can't see each other they shouldn't feel the need to compete.

That is great. I have a long cage with a partition in the middle. I'm planning to put a male and 7 females on one side and 7 females on the other. That way i can create 2 lines and breed a male offspring with the females on the opposite cage.

Malik, you should post a picture of your birds. Maybe if we see them, we can identify the problem.
