Whole oyster shells ok for chickens?

Oh you guys are too funny! Are they still pecking at the shells in the run? I would think they would be entertained trying to pick the darn things apart and certainly it can't hurt them to try.

We gave the girls some leftover oyster shells after Christmas, and they pecked on them for days, even after the residue of oyster meat was gone. It made me wonder if they were getting tiny pieces off the shells gradually. If so, it would save me from having to buy the pulverized stuff, since there are oyster beds nearby.
