I can not answer this fully as I've not had all the breeds, but I once new a man, years ago, that free ranged his silvers and they stayed around his other caged pheasants. When asked, he said the silver didn't need to be penned. How much truth there is to this, I do not know. I did see them walking around his yard like free range chickens.

For about 1 year now, I have had a pair of Tagopan pheasants. First I will say, I have 12 Ring necks, 6 Reeves, 2 Copper pheasants ( newest birds), 12 Partridges, and 3 pairs of Blue Scale Quail. For several months, the Tragopan pheasants will eat out or my hand. When I feed the male peanuts, he will almost climb onto my hand. He is still a little shy. He often perches, as this breed likes high places. I can get my head within a few inched of his. He doesn't move away.
