Hi there!

I’m very new to chickens and chicken genetics. Wondering what determines whether a polish chick is bearded or not.

I’ve NEVER seen a bearded white crested black or blue, for instance. I have only seen gold and buff laced bearded here in Ontario.

I have non-bearded gold laced and two 8 week old pullets - white crested black (?) and splash bearded.

Is it possible for my white crested to have a beard? Why would the splash have it?

So interested, so please do share any insights. Please feel free to get science-y! :)

Genes determine bearding in Polish just like how they determine bearding in any other breed. It’s either a dominant or incompletely dominant trait, I forgot which. Either way, bearded birds have to have had at least one bearded parent. So as long as a bird carries that gene, regardless of color, it would have a beard.

Thank you! It’s even difficult to find photos of bearded, created birds on Google. I’ll keep searching this feed!
