What changes have you made to compensate for the heat?

  • I have started feeding my broilers in the early evening. They seem to be eating better.
  • Checking water more often.
  • I have covered my Salatin type tractors with white plastic panels and the front opening with a tarp to increase shade.
  • I have turned off the brooder lights on my broiler chicks after a couple of days.
  • Probably not to order another batch (would be 5th, 150 bird batch). Don't know if the pasture can handle it. This is due to the anticipated spike in feed prices as much as the heat.

I have my own garden and keep all my extra veggies in the refrigerator so its nice and cold. During the hottest part of the day, I will take some out and they absolutely love them and eat 100%.

I also have a mister unit that I turn on while they eat, so when they finish they have a cool spot to relax in.

I normally only feed earlier in the am and right before bed time so while they digest, its in the cooler parts of the day.
