The AMERAUCANA thread

Pics
I have 3 year-old blue Ameraucanas I bought from a breeder — a rooster and 2 hens. From December to mid-March they laid no eggs. Finally the 2 hens began laying pretty, blue eggs every other day. The rooster isn’t great; he’s mean to my 18 hens. I may end up selling him.
So many good ones out there! No reason to keep one that doesn’t respect his ladies.

My am rooster was aggressive so now he lives by him self but right now is being leased to a friend lol all my roosters are hen less i just take what hen needing breeding then take her back lol

ok, so two of my ameraucaunas have gone broody and stuffed themselves into one nest box. Is this normal? How long before they quit? Im tired of snarling chickens when I go to collect eggs. I didn't know chickens could snarl.

Theoretically sexed pullets, but one of the three has gotten super gangley and is much bigger than the other two. Pullet or rooster? S/he is actually extremely timid, but perhaps that is the breed or just this particular bird…my americaunas kid of keep to themselves in a large mixed flock… Love to hear your thoughts (the photo in the coop is a few weeks old, others are today)

I would say your suspicions that this one is a boy are probably correct. I spent a long time trying to discern my Ameraucanas genders and both looked a bit like this at this age. The back tail feather curving down is a good indication that very soon the comb will start getting redder and larger and the saddles will be more prominent. Mine were born July 2nd and they didn’t look like roosters until almost Thanksgiving. Can you get pics straight on and also of saddle area? Those feathers should be visible by now, but you may have to look for them.
