just curios... Not gonna do it.... But I have a jar of repticalcium I sprinkle on my tortoises food on the occasion... I have yet had a need for calcium for my chickens but do you think they could eat the same supplement sprinkled on feed if there were a need?

The oyster shell is meant to be eaten as needed, and dissolves slowly, so the Ca is available to the hen in the early morning when she is laying down the egg shell. Layer feed is supplemented with Ca, and all-flock type feeds have less than the laying hens need. That's why the separate dish of oyster shell. Crushed egg shells and powder don't last long enough in the hen to work best for shell development. Mary
