I would like to experiment a bit with my new babies arriving next week. Sand in the brooder over shavings would save dust, clean-up, money, and time. What are your thoughts?

Good note about the heat! I hadn't considered that.I've seen some things on using it. The general idea I get is: never until they're eating regularly, use only normal sand, and it can have some harmful microbes it it, so be wary.
Also remember that if you use a heat lamp, sand can get hot on their little feet.
Remember this stuff and it should be fine.

My adult chickens, who have it in the run, can't really kick it in each others faces.I wonder if they would kick it in each others faces scratching around?
