Update: tried to gently push back in? It’s not moving so maybe it’s not prolapse?

Hi!

We just picked up our chicks from an NPIP breeder on Saturday. 8 chicks, but one has had pasty bum everyday but it’s also sticking out? Breeder said they are 4ish days old.

My gut says prolapse, but I’m just not sure with baby chicks.

Ive cleaned it. No pain neosporin. And Veteriycn. She’s drinking but not eating so I made her a watery mash which she’ll drink the water out of. Added some honey from my bees and that helped her gobble some down.

She’s also tooting? Sounds like diarrhea. And it will come out so I know she can go, but I have to be on top of her or it’s pasted again.

Any ideas? Thank you so much! My heart is telling me to do everything for “tuna” but I know sometimes you just can’t with baby chicks.

I don't know much about this so mostly replying to bump your post. Hopefully the honey helped jumpstart something.

But the last pic you posted, it almost looks like she's got calluses on her joint on the leg (maybe I just don't look at a lot of chicks from that angle). Is she up walking around on her feet? Or is that her lying down in the group photo?

Thank you! I have been panicked and had to resort to Facebook! I prefer using this forum as people are so helpful. I appreciate your help.

I noticed that! I thought that was weird because she is only about 4 days old. She walks around on her feet, but is very wobbly. She lays down rarely.

The honey helped and I tried egg yolk.

Can you get some photos of all of her in natural lighting (or without the red light), how she stands, her legs and feet too?

She does have a prolapsed vent, but I'd like to investigate what's going on with her legs too? Looks like possibly some contact dermatitis from laying down a lot. You mention she's not laying down much now, but that may be because of discomfort.

Work on hydration, then see if she'll eat a little wet soupy feed.

Keep the exposed tissue (prolapse) moist with an ointment, oil or organic honey.

Thank you. Sweet Tuna passed just a few moments ago. She couldn’t even lift her head :(

I'm sorry. It's hard when they're so little. But sometimes it's just a failure to thrive situation and there is no intervention that can save them (I had one of these last year).

I hope the rest of your chicks bring you joy (and eggs).
Thank you for your kind words. I think you are right. She was just so so tiny. Compared to her sisters who had grown even in the 3 short days. My first chick loss. I am sorry for yours last year. How do we get so attached to these chickens?! Why are they so sweet!

They are very sweet. Then they go through their teen phase.

My chicks from last year just turned a year old and suddenly it's lap time again. Wouldn't give me the time of day from 6 weeks to 11 months.

And thanks - it's hard to lose one that's so small because you wonder if there's something you could have done differently. But sometimes they're just not meant to be here very long.
