hi all, new to owning chicks on my own (have previously had them but was too small to remember) starting a backyard coop soon so any advice would be appreciated

Welcome to BYC. The chicks will grow fast before you know it. It would be best to get started on a coop as soon as possible. Build a big coop because you'll get addicted to them and will want more chickens.

Your background sounds like mine; the family had chickens when I was a kid, but Dad was the primary "chicken wrangler."

I totally agree with @dawg53 -- build fast and build big. There's lots of BYC threads about coop building with some great ideas that can make your life with chickens safer (for them) and easier (for you).
