Hi everyone! I am a newbie to both raising chickens and to this forum, but I’m happy to be here and grateful for this community!

I recently fulfilled my lifelong dream of becoming an acreage owner! My husband and I have always talked about having a simple life where we are able to pursue self sufficiency, and delving into backyard poultry is a big step toward that. I have a one year old son and his love for being outside is absolutely wholesome. It reassures me that we are really creating a great childhood and future for him 🥹

I currently have 17 chicks…went to Bomgaars for 8, left with 17. Does this count as chicken math that I’ve read so much about!? 🤪 Rhode Island reds, buff Orpington, sapphire gem, Plymouth barred rock, and sex link black.

I spend nearly all my free time at home! I love to get nap trapped, read and listen to books, knit and craft, garden and compost, and also enjoy baking! I work as an anesthesia provider and people are oftentimes SHOCKED when they hear that I live out in the country and enjoy these simple pleasures of life!

I am looking forward to meeting you guys, gleaning knowledge from your vast expanse of experience and expertise, and hopefully one day contributing to the community in some way, shape, or form!

Below are pictures of my gals, our coop (I’m currently renovating with hubby on my rare days off and in between nap times!), and a few pictures of our pups and beautiful land we are so blessed to live on!

Welcome to BYC, and congratulations on your new acreage, and your new chicks!
That's a nice roomy barn but it may be a nightmare to keep predators from getting to your chickens. Be sure and cover any holes larger than a quarter, use plenty of hardware cloth, not chicken wire, and don't neglect the base of the building. Plenty of predators like to dig. Good luck with your flock!
