1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
First had chickens as a kid in rural Idaho. Now living in Hawaii and getting the chance to raise my own flock, though in completely new environs.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None. I am hoping to have a small flock of approximately 6 hens and ~maybe~ a rooster.
(3) What breeds do you have?
None. I am looking into having a rainbow egg flock for the sheer joy of the colors. Very partial to Ameraucana.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I want a flock for the eggs, compost potential, companionship, and to better control my small family's food source.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Sewing, video games (RPGs), gardening, drawing.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I work remotely from my house as a GIS specialist. My house is in a semi-rural area of Hawaii within a sub-division that has one-acre parcels. My household includes my partner and four rescue cats. My plan for the chicken run is to use a Magidome bracket set for the structure. I have yet to figure out where and how the coop will work.
I am looking at keeping the chickens in a run for the following reasons:
There is an active Hawaiian Io (hawk) that lives in the area and I would like to respect it but also have my birds not be on the menu.
Wild pigs- horror stories of them eating sitting hens or young birds. Yard is not fenced and would rather have my flock in a known location.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I decided to join BYC as I prep for my flock. I hope to have the run, coop, and birds all settled by the end of February. I wanted to join the community to gain insights on how to best accomplish building a coop within my skills, wants, and costs while also ensuring its the best for the birds.
