I had posted in Sumi's thread about going to Prague to get my eye surgery and it was asked why: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...is-health-recovery-fund.1335205/post-22265109

Well, all the magic happened on Valentine's Day 2020! After surgery, back to the hotel, my GF took this pic, we ate lunch, then I took a "nap" that lasted 14 hours! I woke up with surprisingly clear vision... a pretty surreal experience after needing to wear thick glasses for 35 years!

I've been wanting lasik surgery for the past 20 years, but each of the 5 times (about every 3-5 years) I've gone in for an exam, they tell me my corneas are too thin. About 5 years ago I heard about IOL / ICL, but that it was only FDA approved in the US for non-astigmatism, so if I got it done, I'd still need lasik in addition to the ICL / IOL surgery. I was like, "NOPE!"

Finally IOL got approved for astigmatism in the US... about 1.5 years ago, so I started down the process of getting it done here in the SF Bay area... even had a Dr. picked out and had the surgery scheduled. About 2 weeks before the surgery, I just wasn't feeling comfortable with the team / facilities, so I baked out. Then over the next month I started doing more research and chose Prague.

Peeps kept asking why I chose Prague. The main reasons were: better services/facilities, cheaper, many more years experience with this procedure than any Dr in the US. This procedure (IOL for astigmatism) has only been approved in the US for about 1.5 years, but they've been doing it in Europe for around 10. The Dr. I chose has done 40,000 lens replacements and then also IOL insertions since 1996. I also contacted about 2 dozen people directly that had the procedure done here and they all raved about the facilities, Drs. staff, etc. Those are the reasons I chose Prague.

After getting there, my decision was reinforced by the incredible staff, facilities, tech, etc. I've been getting my eyes checked and examined for 35+ years, and over the past 20, I've had many evaluations for Lasik and one for ICL in the US last month. I've NEVER had such thorough and detailed examinations on my eyes. I had multiple tests done that I've never had done before. All the machines they used seemed cutting-edge. Everyone involved was incredibly smart and helpful. The organization I went through assigned smart, young, friendly translators to help with all the communication during the process. I kept expecting them to leave to take care of other clients, but for the two days I was there (4 & 6 hours) they sat with me, answering questions, interacting with the many nurses / Drs., and even getting me drinks, etc. as needed. It was amazing 5-star personalized service.

So, yeah... better / more individualized care and service, nicer facilities, more thorough exams, newest tech, overall better experience... and all this (including flights and hotel) for less than I would have paid in the SF Bay Area!!!

First night out with the new eyeballs... went dancing with the GF!

On the way back from Prague we setup a 24 hour layover in Dublin to visit Sumi!

I read a thing a few times (not sure how true as I didn't run the numbers myself but seemed to be using real numbers) that said that for the cost of a hip replacement in the USA you could go to Spain, live there a year, do the running with the bulls thing, have your hip replaced and fly back... I also have a FB friend that goes to Mexico for a lot of minor things (like dental) due to the ridiculously cheap prices...
