The very young chicks still have those sharp talons they were hatched with and need to be trimmed off when kept in brooders. We try to keep them trimmed starting at four to five weeks of age but sometimes we don't get it done on time and this happens. This chick was hopped on and lacerated so this is what we do. First disinfect the area and give meloxicam for pain relief. Then we suture the laceration and apply Blu-Kote.
