Is the voltage in my electric fence high enough for foxes?

We lost our fence charger in a lightning strike one year; the electric tape was hit in the south field, and the jolt ran 600+ feet to the charger, killing it. ONE WEEK later, the same thing happened, and another new charger, and this time we added a surge protector to the outlet, in hopes that would help. Since then another charger just failed, for no apparent reason. They do die, and need to be replaced on occasion.
We have about one mile of fencing, and want 7 to 10 joules on the electric tape or rope, by fence tester. Use a unit that carries a good punch!

To give your fence charger a fair test, remove it from the fence. Then test it straight from the hot lead on the fencer directly to the earth ground side. Assuming you have a fully charged battery, or AC is plugged in, that that takes out all the variables, and will tell you what your fencer is putting out.

If the voltage is weak, fencer is toast. If volatage is back up to where it should be, fault lies in the fence itself. Broken wires, or fence is grounded out somewhere.
