I thought they had regular cameras by the forties? That looks like a smaller, slightly updated one of the kind Mathew Brady would have used!

I've used a 4x5 view camera, and like the guy on the dock, I used a dark cloth over my head when taking photos.

They did have newer style cameras by the 40's but a few hard heads were still using view cameras as long as they could get film developed. Clyde Butcher developed my interest in large format photography. He has a studio gallery where is prints are often measured in feet not inches. The largest print I've seen of his was 6' x 16' that was hung in the Ft. Lauderdale Airport.

The view camera I have can have a digital body mounted to the back side and use the large format lens and movements of the body..... I might just try that one day...
