I'm so old I Remember when:

I remember when those paper bags were in use that meats and ice cream were double bagged in paper. And unlike shopping at big box stores your cart got take to your car and unloaded for you.
Those paper bags on ice cream did help to slow the melting.

We still have one small grocer that always takes out my bags. Service like that is rare these days.

Our local grocery store still says, "paper or plastic." We always go with plastic as the bags we use to line the bathroom garbage can. I suppose we should be more environmentally conscious and ask for paper though.
It can be a tough choice. Many stores switched to plastic to save the trees the paper bags were made from.

@troyer may I ask where you are generally located in the country?
I got this....
@troyer
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

And then the tree farms for paper pulps go out of business. The over all picture is larger than a postage stamp. Tree farms have valuable land for home sites. Tree farms remove Co2 from the air.... Plastic bags if not made from vegetable oil are made from crude.
