If California grey can produce sex-linked, why not go further & make autosexing breed?

Not sure why the additional work was not done, they'd gone this far... to just make an auto sexing breed like the cream legals, etc.

California gray is a breed that is based on the Barred Plymouth Rock X Leghorn
It is then crossed back on Leghorn to produce California White sexlinks

If the California Gray is pure for barring, like Barred Rocks are, they could be autosexing with a bit of selection for clear distinction of males and females.

Cream Legbars have the barring on a different base color, and adding the genes for that would have required mixing in some other breed, and quite a bit more breeding work to get it back to the other traits that were wanted.

The articles you linked said California Gray roosters are used to sire feather-sexable sexlinks, not color-sexable ones. To get ones that are color-sexable, they would have to use California Gray hens and not-barred roosters.

California Grays are technically autosexing if you examine their head spots, down, etc. as chicks. California White sexlinks are produced less for ease of sexing and more to create a tougher white egg layer for alternative methods of production, such as pasturing and free range.

The California is an auto-sexing breed as is the cream legbar and Welsummer

So I have two CA Gray chicks. One is ever-so slightly darker with a headspot. The other, lighter and more silvery. Is the no-headspot the male?
