I recently bought five, month-and-a-half-old chicks of different breeds. The man told us that they all should be pullets, but he wasn’t sure. There are two golden laced wyandottes, two red laced wyandottes, and I can’t remember what he said the last one was. I raise them as pets, and for the eggs of course. I would like to know before I get completely attached (which I’m sure it’s too late) if they are indeed little hens. Please tell me if I need better pictures of them!

One of the BLRW looks like it's a cockerel.
The other BLRW looks like it may have a pendulous crop. It's quite distended.
The rest look like pullets.
The fifth one looks like a speckled sussex. They are all hatchery quality.
If you could put them in their run, maybe you could get some better pictures?

I have six other chickens, three being Rhode Island Reds, which can be aggressive so I’m trying to introduce them slowly. I also thought one of the BLRW looked like a cockerel. Thank you for the help!

Seriously, how are y'all sexing these at this age. My darn brother told me we have to wait until they get old enough for the Roos to crow!

Please explain.

Thanks,
TWG

Sexing can be done pretty easily at about 8 weeks old with certain birds. Males will tend to get their wattles in earlier than the females and will also had darker red heads. Plus, you can look at certain aspects of the comb.

For my black copper Marans I can sex them at 4 weeks because the males show so early.

I’m definitely thinking these guys are 2.5 to 3 months old. Seem rather large for six week olds.

These are mine at 6 weeks, spot the difference

Much different looking
I would have to agree with you, these look much younger than mine. I really hope I have more than one hen out of the bunch! Thanks so much!
