Grit? Sand?

OK, my dh went to the hardware store this morning and bought "bird gravel." It's bigger than sand (between 1/16 and 1/8 inch) and turns out not to be just gravel: it also contains oyster shells and charcoal. I'm guessing it's not good for chicks, right? Can I give it to my hen?
Maybe I'll just get some play sand.

No not good for chicks -that much I know. Someone else will have to answer about the hen, not sure on that.

did you try the grocery store? I live in a super small town and mine has it in the pet food isle.

Sometimes play sand has been bleached etc. so be careful. If worst come to worst go outside and in a place thats chemical free (no driveway oil, no weed killer) and grab some sand/dirt off the ground
