Today is the day we move the chicks outside to their coop. They're about 5-8 weeks old now. Some were older than others when we bought them. My question, though, deals with grit and their chick feed. Do I mix the grit in with the food and if so, what's a good ratio? Is it better to just have grit in a separate dish and available to the chicks? In the brooder in the basement, we've been adding grit to the food, but i'm not sure how much is too much or too little.

I’m definitely no expert but from what I can tell they will get the grit as they feel they need it. So in a separate container seems to work good for me thus far.

I do oyster shell on the side but mix my poultry grit in the feed. The recommended amount is 1 lb. per 40 lbs of feed 8 weeks and older. Can also supply on the side. :)

I mix Chick Grit in Start & Grow feed starting at 2 weeks of age till 10 weeks. 1 pound of Grit to 40 pounds of feed. (10 ounces to a 25 pound bag of feed).
At 7 weeks I offer Poultry Grit in a separate container.
Around 16 weeks I offer Oyster Shells in a separate container. GC
