I don't know the exact life cycle of the mites you have.
But not treating or waiting too long or too short of time to retreat is probably just as bad as not treating.
So make sure you retreat soon and AGAIN in ten more days.
You are going to need to do this for a few (think FOUR) times, IMO, to get a hold on the high number of mites you are dealing with.
When I was reading back, I noticed you have been dealing with them for YEARS.
Which means you have never gotten rid of them and you need to treat often and probably more than just four times to get rid of them.

I have the sweetest little polish. Her mate is the mean one and they are separated. I noticed last night she sleeps outside alone. She comes running to me and wants to be held when she sees me. I dont know what to do w/ her if anything

The one that loved me used to come sit on my foot wanting to be picked up. That is the one the hawk carried off.
