I am looking for a new small dog.

I know that mini dachunds are mini psychopaths and will kill anything that is not a cat, dog or human. (my previous mini dachund killed over 2 dozen chickens...and just bc he could...other than that i miss him greatly).

do miniature pinschers get along with chickens?

are there better small breeds that I should look at? (dogs about 25 lbs. only please, - we also had indoor kittens frequently and want to make sure the dog would not hurt the kittens)

Our daughter’s dog is half min pin. High prey drive. He rushes at the chickens every time he passes the run. We keep him on a leash at all times.

Honestly it depends on what breeder you get them from. And how they are trained. There are many great dog breeds under 25lbs. I can get a list if you want?
I have one field bred golden retriever
And one pet/show golden retriever . The field bred i cant even put around a bird even though i did try and teach him to be gentle he would kill them.
The pet/ show one can be left alone with any chicken or small animal she would put a tooth on them.

What dog did you eventually decide on? I raised my minpin with hens. Because he was so tiny when he first encountered them, the hens pecked at him and he treated them with respect. Constant exposure and reinforcing his good behaviour for leaving them paid off. As an adult he was still death on rodents and an avid but frustrated bird wild murderer, who didn’t bother even watching the hens. Maybe I was just lucky, or maybe the twice a day training from 10 weeks actually paid off

I think we worry too much about breeds and not enough about training. My sister in laws min pin paid no attention to the chickens when she stayed with us and learned quickly that cats can be mean! One of the most lovable dogs I was ever around was a huge red doberman male, looked very menacing but he loved everyone and everything.

Mine was around 10 or 11 when I got my chicks 3 or 4 years ago..? It takes time and some dogs are better than others socializing, not sure my old Jack Russell mix would have ever been ok around them. Now sometimes my Min Pin will scare them just to play, but I can trust him around the chickens more than I can trust him being loose on the property and coming back when called.
