That’s exactly what I used! After seeing my house hen getting broody, then bummed out year after year, we decided to get her some fertile eggs to sit on. When I used to have a pair of incubators running nonstop, I had a super high-powered LED flashlight with a cardboard egg holder taped to it. I couldn’t find it this time, so I just took the eggs into the pantry one by one and used my iPhone. Worked like a charm!

You can use a phone flashlight so long as the shells are not too dark. If you’re planning to hatch more eggs in the future I’d say a proper candler is worth the investment: you’ll get less light leakage, a brighter light (hopefully) and also the egg will sit on there nicely and safely.

I have a Brinsea Ecoglow which is great although I do wish I bought the high intensity one as I occasionally hatch marans eggs which are so difficult to candle because of their very dark shells.
