Do the broody hens have to be hatching eggs? I just had a hen that went broody but she’s not hatching anything (don’t have a rooster, so no fertilized eggs)

No it's just broody. Just say if they have no eggs or not. Like this:

This is Violetta's mother, Moonshine, a 3 yr old Sebright, with last years' chicks at 2 weeks, who are Spitzhauben and Spitz/Sebright mixes. Violetta is in there, I don't know who is who....

She took those babies outdoors every day starting at 3 days old. They spent a LOT of time not under her, even tho it was chilly outside.

Mochi, my Silkie bantam is a little over a year, and loves to go broody. (No eggs, just a rock) She is absolutely the sweetest broody, no pecking or anything!

Pippin is like that, always broody, never pecks you or shows aggression. She doesn't puff up when I come to feed her, only puffs at other chickens!

Her first time on fertile eggs but she goes broody all of the time so I let her make her dreams of being a mom come true!
