I live with my son and his wife and their baby. Last year I brooded a flock of chicks in their garage. My son says never again. After some mishaps and a major assault from local red tail hawks, I find I need 3 more hens and a rooster. I ordered them to be delivered end of July. I’m setting up a flight cage in the coop (30”x18” in a 6x6 foot coop). They will have a heating plate in the cage. If needed, I will provide a cover for added protection. I plan to allow the chicks to free range with the adults at about 6 to 10 weeks. Always with supervision. Am I asking too much of my established flock?

Our silkies free range and the younger ones are usually left alone until they are at the feeder or ferment dish, then the older ones come and peck them away. This is all outdoors though so they can run away from the mean older ones if they want to. At night, they all have separate coops until 4-5 months old, then they all join the main coop.
