Hello from middle Georgia! I am almost a new chicken mom…

Hi everyone! We had chickens and a couple of ducks when I was about nine years old (that was MANY moons ago!). My husband and I are building a chicken tractor with coop, and we will be getting 3 lavender Orpington pullets and one cockerel. For a start, anyway. I am also getting Guinea fowl keets...

    First Time Chick Mom

Hello.... We just began our adventure of raising chicks. We are currently are parents (3-adults), grandparents and dog lovers. Our kids have mostly 'flown the coop' and so we decided to add to our home flock, some chickens. My husband grew up on a farm and I'm a city girl. So, bear with me...

    Gender?

The feed store said it was a lavender Orpington. He/she is about 5-6 weeks old. I’m hoping a hen. I am concerned about the long tail feathers. There are two that are identical. Both have longer tail feathers and a little bigger combs than the other breeds we have that are the same age.

Help! Is this Lavender Orpington a Pullet or Cockerel?

Greetings! Please see photos of our very friendly and gorgeous Lavender Orpington who turned 11 weeks old today. We live in a dense urban area and are not allowed to have roosters, so we'd like to know as soon as possible if s/he is a girl or boy. We'd be so sad to have to give this one up as...

Is this a (very) late blooming Rooster or?

Hey everyone! Was handing out Sunday snacks and realized that one of our Lavender Orpingtons had some feathers that look more like our rooster.. A laying pullet on the left and her not laying “sister” on the right. Everyone is about 28 weeks old including Buckbeak, our rooster in the back...

    Lavender Orpingtons with "shredded" tails

One of my four lavenders has the shredded tail. I think she's the prettiest of the bunch. I actually prefer the fluffy tail. It makes her look like she's wearing petticoats. However, I have seen this referenced as "bad feathers." Is the so called "shredder gene" really such a bad thing?? Is it...

What’s the weirdest spot your hen(s) has laid?

My 24/25 week old lavender orpington named Dori and suspected ameracauna mix named Lexi started laying about 3 weeks ago. We have 4 nest boxes in our coop and after locking them in the coop and run for 2 days when they first started, they’ve finally figured out to lay in them… or have they...

    Lav Orp pullet???

I am perplexed by this chicken! S/he is almost 17 weeks old and started getting redder in the comb and wattles this week. S/he has been pretty pale pink up till this week. I know when they are close to laying they get redder, but s/he has been a very slow feathering chicken so I’m not sure if...

    Lavender orpington first eggs!

Just wanted to show off my first eggs we’ve gotten in two months since my silkie hen went broody and hatched her chick. My lavender orpington laid her first egg yesterday in the nesting box and laid a slightly bigger one today in another nesting box! She’s about 22-23 weeks so it’s about time...

My flock as a first time chicken owner!

Like many others on this forum, I love my flock and especially as a first time chicken owner I love showing them off, so why not introduce them? We got my flock from a family friend who now has over 200 chickens and turkeys, many goats, a couple dogs and soon to be some horses! She was kind...

Hello BYC community! Have used this resource for years and today felt like the right day to finally sign up! Our journey with chicks has been a long and wonderful one. Would take too long to mention all the highs and lows but just wanted to offer that I’m here for continued learning from the...

    Lavender Orpington pullet? 13 weeks

Based on personality, and a LOT of viewing other people’s LOs at around this stage…I’m getting a bit more sure she’s a she. She has a ton of broken feathers in her tail area but when I pull them apart they look rounded. Her comb also still looks pink to me and has looked exactly like this no...

Lavender Orpington Chick - Roo or Pullet?

I received two lavender orpingtons when they were 2 weeks old and I think they may both be Roos... I would appreciate any feedback! One of the below images is the little chick at 2 weeks and the second is at 3.5 weeks. After reviewing photos of this breed, I think they may have been older than...

Chicks hatched 3/5/21. The Lavender Orpington is named Lupa and the Easter Egger is named Chigusa, which means "a thousand seeds" in Japanese.

Our Lavenders Made It Safe and Sound

Our 3 Lavender Orpingtons made it home safe and sound! I ordered from My Pet Chicken, and loved the experience! They were toasty warm with their heat pad and everyone looks healthy! No pasty butt so far. They seem healthier than our older feed store chicks. They looked so cute in their...

How slow is typical for slow feathering??

So I know that each bird is different and they feather at their own rate...but how slow is too slow or is there such a thing? I got 4 chicks at the same time that are all within a day of each other age wise. I believe they’re approximately 3.5 weeks old. I got two lavender Orps and two BLRWs...
