Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

I now live west of Spokane Washington but I grew up on my parents farm in Ohio where they farmed over 200 acres raised over 100000 starter layer chickens and 240 sows and the finisher held over 1400 hogs. They had to soil test. My cousins had over 500 sow operation and finished the pigs and...

Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

I wish there was more soil testing done on nice green yards. Especially for nitrogen run off from over watering. Large farms get tested for run off every year. Can't say a backyard chicken farm ever gets tested for run off or soil erosion caused by chickens.

Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

Large farms 50 years ago used to be very polluting but now with the high cost of fertilizers and chemicals they aren't anymore. Farmers use very precise machines to apply these products. I am amazed when I see the equipment they use today on YouTube. Very high tech stuff. My Korean wife's mother...

Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

Someone made a comment about years ago chickens being raised in town. Hum, if I go back fithty years ago to the town I grew up near no one had chickens in town. Chickens were considered lice carryers and rodent attractors. The only animal that might have been raised was the rabbit. Never...

Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

Where we live our greatest fear is someone buying land next to us and complaining about whatever. Even though we live on land zoned for livestock. It happens there has been many farms closed because of this. Years ago backyard farms were called hobby farms. Because they don't produce enough to...

Excellent comments and yes I do know where Enumclaw is. We used to live in Tumwater WA now we live west of Spokane WA on a twenty acre farm. I built the sixty by sixteen leentwo barn. And we are completely off grid living the retired life. We couldn't do what we do near or in town guineas are...

Could someone please explain why most backyard chicken growers put their chickens to the very back of their property next to their neighbors property? Just something I've noticed on YouTube.

You are correct there is a trend in the right direction if the consumer can except the price of the product. And the backyard farms can be competitive in the market place with quality and price. Right now in Utah there is a beef packer designed for and only for local cattle. We have a grocery...

Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

We have at times had alot of birds on our farm. Our main problem with the backyarders is their location and the problems that they could pose to us even though we're doing things right and in the proper location. I watched my dad live with this problem. He had 100000 pullets, 1400 hogs and 240...

Honestly, the real problem with commercial farms is not how the animals are raised. It's how the farmer is paid. Farms many many year ago switched from being paid for quality to quantity. When that happens the growing conditions changed too not to many farmers liking but out of need to support...

Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

I wish people would try to understand the need of commercial farms. The chickens that are raised there are specifically bred to be in those conditions. Then after a couple years they become fastfood, soups and processed meats. It's what keeps the world fed. As for the owners of chickens alot...

Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

I'm am noticing that people are trying really hard to confuse the chicken issue by adding other pets. I'm trying really hard to not acknowledge other pets. Thats really a whole different matter. Laws are totally different. There just really no way to justify wants over needs when it comes to...

There's a proper place for everything. In housing areas is just not the place. Everyone here knows I'm right but just want to live in denial and be left alone even though there is a much bigger picture.

My wife and I for awhile used to go around and gather up unwanted chickens to butcher and eat. But porcupine is really good. Have no desire to gather up peoples unwanted dogs and cats to eat. Notice my wording unwanted. Alot of people start a chicken venture only to find out it's not for them.

Four hens don't cause a problem by themselves. The problem is they're not alone. The state and local governments gotta look at the big potential development.

Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

Hence the reason my wife and I live in the wilds of eastern Washington totally off grid. It saddens us to see people living and working in filthy conditions. But compound this problem with chickens a person starts to understand my point.

My wife and I enjoyed your comment. Except, we thought about it for a few minutes then said this. EPA animal units per acre. I'm going to include all possible animals in a given area of say a forty home area and each home sits on a typical half acre lot. Homes are large in these developments so...

Should poultry be raised in cities, county communities or near any of these?

Glad you asked this is exactly the reason I started this thread to have open conversation. Okay my reasons. Smell, flies, rodents, noise, pollution (chicken 💩), run off from poultry all the things large farms have to deal with that small backyard don't think about till someone complains. Death...
