Even if it was an old injury, you should be able to see if it is genetic (a tail that is tapered and with fur all the way). An injury would be an abrupt stub with no fur on the very end.

Eastern birds seem not to like milo - at all. That is the seed that is always left in a feeder from lower priced wild bird mixes. I had a dedicated cardinal feeder with safflower. They seem to be the only species that like it.
