What would be the point of an x-ray? That would only show a stuck egg if it were calcified, because it only shows hard things, right? Would it be more appropriate to ask for an ultrasound? We don't really have a vet for birds, but if I knew exactly what I needed (e.g. "I want an ultrasound,"...

Hello again, We're at day 3 now... she's still pooping, but only pretty loose stuff (not completely liquid though--she had one that was gelatinous, like a smoothie, for lack of better descriptor). My chicken-savvy friend came over and felt her belly, and we found a lump that's not...

@azygous No egg yet, some more runny poop. One of my chicken-owning friends just told me I could try soaking her bum in a warm epsom salt bath. If I don't have an egg by tomorrow, should I do that? What about putting vaseline on her vent?

Ok. Also, she just pooped, but her poop is completely liquid, yellow, and has some chalky white chunks and darker, solid pellets in it. What do I make of that?

Sounds good. Is there anything else I can do? Should I give her more calcium? She expressed interest in the pill I did give her, and I know birds can't really have too much, so should I just give her a little pile of pills to work on?

P.S. I just administered the calcium, I got it all down. After the first chunk (I broke up the pill), she actually ate some more on her own. Is it possible that she knew she needed it?

I was just out of town for a week, and my fowl-challenged family was put in charge of the chickens, so I don't know how long this has been going on for. I went to let the birds out this morning and Clara, my 3-4ish-year-old (not exactly sure--I got her as an adult) Rhode Island Red hen was...

Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

I put "chicken merch" on my Christmas list and purposefully did not specify whether the merch was to be for me or the chickens. I got some of both... thanks to Maria for being such a good sport!

    GUYS IM SO HAPPY

I first got chickens when I was 13, and I was one of those annoying, overly-cuddly chicken moms who chases her birds all around for smooches. They didn't mind too terribly, but they didn't adore my company, either. So, for the past couple of years, I've been trying to be super respectful of my...

I've heard it leaves a residue on feathers. Would it restrict the feathers' ability to keep my birds warm in our cold MN winters?

Hmm... I think the Scalyx has already been going a pretty good job of that. That's the one nice thing about Elector PSP. I'll have to look into the residue aspect, but that's starting to look like a much better solution than Crisco.

Does permethrin kill nits too? That's the most important thing for this case, I think.

    Epic Battle against Lice

I have 7 chickens, and they all have varying degrees of lice. I've been battling them since August. Here's what I've been doing, and what I'm planning on doing: When I first noticed them, I started doing what I did last time this happened: I switch them from one pen to another every week...

Can coffee strainers be used instead of mesh gauze? Also--I know you can't use old poop samples, but after you've put the slide cover on the slide, can you wait to look at it under a microscope? I have the materials to prep the slides but I don't have a compound microscope with an 40x objective...
